Observed Skills Management

The Observed Skills Management screen allows administrators to define and maintain the clinical skills that are tracked and assessed within the system. These skills represent specific competencies that students are expected to demonstrate during their clinical training.

Observed skills are organized by Discipline and are used in assessments and evaluations to measure student performance.

Accessing Observed Skills

To access the Observed Skills Management screen:

  1. From the left-hand navigation menu, expand Clinical
  2. Select Observed Skills

The screen displays a list of disciplines, each of which can be expanded to view the associated observed skills.

Understanding the Screen

  • Observed skills are grouped under their associated Discipline
  • Each discipline can be expanded or collapsed using the arrow icon
  • Use Expand All or Collapse All to quickly view or hide all skills
  • The search bar allows you to locate specific observed skills
  • Each skill can be edited directly within its discipline group

Relationship to Disciplines

Observed skills are directly linked to Disciplines, and this relationship determines how they are used throughout the system.

  • Observed skills are used in assessments and evaluations completed by preceptors
  • They represent measurable clinical competencies rather than activities performed
  • The selected discipline ensures that only relevant skills are available within the correct clinical context

This structure supports consistent and discipline-specific evaluation of student performance.

Creating a New Observed Skill

To create a new observed skill:

  1. Click + New Observed Skill
  2. Enter the Observed Skill Name
  3. Select the appropriate Discipline from the dropdown list
  4. Click Save Observed Skill

The new skill will appear under the selected discipline.

Editing an Existing Observed Skill

To edit an observed skill:

  1. Expand the relevant Discipline
  2. Locate the skill you want to update
  3. Click Edit
  4. Update the Observed Skill Name or change the Discipline if required
  5. Click Save Observed Skill

Changes will be applied immediately and reflected wherever the skill is used.

Deleting Observed Skills

⚠️ Observed skills cannot be deleted.

This restriction ensures data integrity, as observed skills may be linked to:

  • Existing assessments and evaluations
  • Historical performance data
  • Reporting and analytics

If a skill is no longer required, it is recommended to:

  • Leave it unused going forward
  • Or update its name if appropriate

Important Notes

  • Observed skills are essential for evaluating student competency
  • They differ from observed activities, which track what was done—skills measure how well it was performed
  • Changes may impact reporting and historical evaluation data

Maintaining accurate observed skills ensures meaningful, consistent assessment across disciplines.
